BAFTA Triumphs

On 12 May, Eurovision 2023 took home the coveted Live Event Coverage award at the 70th BAFTA Television Awards, triumphing over notable competitors like The Coronation Concert and The Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance. This accolade highlights the event’s exceptional live production and marks a significant achievement in its expanding trophy cabinet. In addition to this the production team clinched two BAFTA Television & Craft Awards on 29 April; Director: Multi Camera: Nikki Parsons, Ollie Bartlett, and Richard Valentine and Entertainment Craft Team: Julio Himede, Tim Routledge, Kojo Samuel, Michael Sharp, and Dan Shipton.

Royal Television Society Honours

In March, the Royal Television Society (RTS) honoured Eurovision 2023 with two awards; Live Event: Recognising the outstanding execution of the live broadcast and Entertainment Performance: Awarded to Hannah Waddingham for her exceptional hosting. Earlier, at the RTS Craft & Design Awards, Eurovision won the Production Management Team award, further acknowledging the meticulous planning and execution behind the scenes.

Additional Accolades

The success of Eurovision 2023 continued with numerous other awards; Best Music Programme at the Broadcast Awards, Outstanding Event Production at the TPI Awards and Outstanding Achievement and People’s Choice at the BBC Awards. The production’s commitment to celebrating music and unity was praised by industry experts, who commended its ability to make “Ukraine feel at home in the streets of Liverpool.”

Changemaker Award

In September, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) accepted the inaugural Changemaker Award from the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC). This award celebrated Eurovision’s significant cultural impact and its role in promoting unity, diversity, and inclusivity through music.

It’s incredible how quickly time has flown since we were on site in Liverpool, working on last year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The experience was a whirlwind of activity and creativity, and now the crew in Sweden are gearing up for another spectacular run of shows.

Best of luck to all the contestants competing in this year’s contest! And a special shoutout to the hardworking crew behind the scenes—I hope you have a fantastic run of shows. Producing Eurovision is no small feat. The crew works tirelessly every day of the week, as each live show (Semi-Final 1, Semi-Final 2, and the Grand Final) is preceded by three dress rehearsals: one closed to the public, the jury show, and the family show. This is in addition to all participants rehearsing individually on stage twice for each show, with rehearsals beginning up to two weeks before the Saturday night Grand Final. Phew!

We are excited to see that Autodesk and the Nemetschek Group have joined forces to advance open, interoperable workflows for the architecture, engineering, construction, operations (AECO), and media and entertainment (M&E) industries. This collaboration will enhance interoperability between both companies’ cloud and desktop products, enabling seamless data exchange and improved project outcomes. In particular this should enhance cross platform collaboration between AutoCAD and Vectorworks users – which are two commonly used software platforms used in the entertainment industry.

By integrating Autodesk’s cloud solutions with Nemetschek’s platforms, this partnership aims to break down data silos, optimise workflows, and support open industry standards. This move represents a significant step toward a more connected and efficient future in design and construction.

During the visit, we meticulously surveyed the areas designated for installation, paying close attention to the building’s architectural intricacies and the surrounding environment. Precise measurements were taken, which will be essential in refining our design for the interior installation to ensure both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Interacting with the local team from the brand and gaining their perspective was invaluable. Their insights will help us create an installation that is not only visually stunning but also meets the needs of its clientele.

In our profession, where precision and attention to detail are crucial, a site visit is far more than a formality. It is an opportunity to connect with the space, gather essential data, and refine our plans to align with real-world conditions. This visit to Paris has reinforced the importance of being on-site, and we are confident that this project on the Champs-Élysées will be a testament to our commitment to excellence.

As we continue to develop this exciting project, we are reminded of the irreplaceable value that firsthand experience brings to the design process.
